The brief
“It's the first thing anyone sees and it felt like a dentist's waiting room.”
How we did it
The hall at the Old Vicarage is four metres tall and lit by one pendant. We painted the walls a warm stone that looks good in daylight and lamplight, then picked out the spindles, handrail and a run of cupboards under the stairs in a deep navy.
A woven pendant, a round mirror on a leather strap and a coat bench by the door make it a room rather than a corridor. Wall lights up the stairs mean nobody has to climb in the dark any more.
What we did
Walls, woodwork and stair painted in two colours
Woven pendant and four wall lights
Cupboard under the stairs for coats and shoes
Runner on the stairs and a new doormat well
